Port of Lisbon wins Best Cruise Terminal in Europe at the World Cruise Awards 2024 for the second time
The Port of Lisbon Cruise Terminal was distinguished, for the second time, as the Best Cruise Terminal in Europe and the city of Lisbon was elected as the Best Cruise Destination in the continent at the 4th edition of the prestigious World Cruise Awards, whose ceremony took place in Funchal, Madeira.
The Lisbon Cruise Terminal reaffirms its status as an international reference, by winning this title for the second time, surpassing other renowned terminals such as those in Barcelona, Oslo, Valletta and Amsterdam. The Lisbon terminal, which was already awarded in 2022, stands out for its exceptional reception conditions, harmoniously integrating the city and the Tagus River.
On the other hand, Lisbon reaffirms itself as a destination of choice by winning the award for Best Cruise Destination in Europe, also for the second time, after a first achievement in 2021. This award puts Lisbon ahead of iconic destinations such as Athens, Barcelona, Dubrovnik, Kotor, Rome and Nice.
Carlos Correia, president of APL – Administration of the Port of Lisbon, stated: «Lisbon is today synonymous with excellence in the cruise industry, with a superior quality infrastructure and a sustainable strategy that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors per year. This recognition is the result of the joint commitment of the Port of Lisbon, local authorities and tourism entities, in creating a unique and sustainable experience for everyone who chooses Lisbon as a destination». Carlos Correia also highlighted «the pioneering role of the Port of Lisbon in the sustainability of the sector, with initiatives such as the creation of the Cruise Activity Sustainability Committee in Lisbon and the launch of the “Cruises for the Community” program, which promotes social integration and sustainable development in the city».
Regarding the terminal's award, the president of APL stated: «This award confirms the Lisbon Cruise Terminal as a work that honours Portuguese architecture, while at the same time positioning Lisbon among the best ports in Europe. It is a symbol of hospitality and innovation at the service of tourism».
The World Cruise Awards, awarded since 2021, recognize excellence in the cruise sector and are considered the "Oscars of cruise tourism". Lisbon and Madeira have dominated the category of Best Cruise Destination in Europe, maintaining the award in Portugal throughout all editions.
This year's gala brought together the main names in the cruise sector in a celebration that highlighted excellence and innovation in the industry, consolidating the Port of Lisbon's positioning and its leading role as a reference destination and infrastructure in cruise tourism.
The Lisbon Cruise Terminal accumulates several important distinctions, including:
- Valmor and Municipal Architecture Award 2017;
- Recognition at the Wallpaper Design Awards 2017, which chose Lisbon as "Best City";
- Best Cruise Terminal in Europe at the World Cruise Awards 2022;
- Secil Engineering Award 2023, awarded to engineer Marisa Ferreira, responsible for the terminal's structural design – a historic distinction as it was the first time in 30 years that the award has been given to a woman.
