Port of Lisbon Rises 99 Positions in International Efficiency Ranking

Lisbon, June 7, 2024: The Port of Lisbon climbed 99 positions in the 2023 international ranking of the most efficient container ports, evaluated by the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI). This index, released this week by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, compares data from 405 ports worldwide, each with a minimum of 24 annual container ship calls.

The Port of Lisbon reached the 121st position in the Europe and North Africa regional ranking of container ports, a significant achievement resulting from a 99-position jump from 2022 (previously 220th), representing a 45% improvement in the CPPI, positioning it as the most efficient national port. Nationally, the Port of Sines ranked 126th, Leixões 292nd, and Setúbal, making its debut in this ranking, at 333rd.

The Port of Lisbon takes pride in being among the most efficient in the world, a result of the constant dedication of its port community, workers, partners, and concessionaires, thus reaffirming its importance and centrality in the Europe-America-Africa axis for containerized cargo, providing its clients with modern, efficient, and environmentally responsible infrastructure.

Carlos Correia, Chairman of the APL Board of Directors, emphasizes that “this improvement in the efficiency of the Port of Lisbon is largely due to the recent €140 million investment by Yilport in the Alcântara Container Terminal, which has allowed for an increase in the size of ships operating at the terminal, to over 14,000 TEU capacity, and an improvement in terminal operations, as well as a reduction in transportation costs in the logistics chain and the containerization of new cargoes being handled through Lisbon.”

On a global scale, the Port of Lisbon achieved the 134th position in the IPPC efficiency ranking, climbing 82 places from the 216th position in 2022, corresponding to a 38-percentage point improvement in the CPPI efficiency index.

Among the top-performing global ports, the Port of Yangshan in China ranked first for the second consecutive year, while the Port of Salalah in Oman maintained the second position, and the Port of Cartagena in Colombia rose to third place.

This annual index, developed by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, is in its fourth edition and is based on the largest dataset ever: over 182,000 ships, 238.2 million movements, and 381 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the full calendar year of 2023.

The CPPI ranks global container ports by efficiency, focusing on the duration of container ships' stay in port. Its main objective is to identify areas for improvement to benefit multiple stakeholders in the global trade system and supply chains, from ports to shipping companies, national governments, and consumers.

It is worth noting that more than 80% of merchandise trade is transported by sea, making the resilience, efficiency, and overall performance of ports crucial for global markets and economic development.
