Port of Lisbon registers strong growth in the 1st Semester of 2021
• Tons handled increased +15.7% compared to the same period in 2020;
• Containerized cargo grows +38.8% and solid bulk +10.6%
The Port ort of Lisbon, confirming the gradual recovery of its activity, handled more than 4,820 million tons in the 1st half of this year, an increase of +15.7% compared to the same period of 2020, with 4 166 963 tons handled.
Despite of the strong global economic downturn and the entire negative situation, which affected the Port of Lisbon cargo throughput, June 2021 shows a very expressive increase in the global movement, corresponding to a variation of +56.2%, in tons handled, this being the fourth consecutive month in which has been observed an uninterrupted growth.
A shift in the trend of recent times, was particularly registered in the handling of containerized cargo, with June 2021 showing increases of +73.6%, Solid Bulk +52.2% and Liquid Bulk +12,5%, compared to the same period in 2020.
In accumulated terms and by segment, in the 1st semester of this year, the growth in Containerized Cargo registered +38.8% (from 1 314 722 tons in the 1st Semester of 2020 to 1 825 291 this year). Solid Bulk, on the other hand, increased +10.6% (from 2,138,006 tons to 2,363,733 in 2021), contradicted only by the persistent drop in Liquid Bulk, corresponding to -16.6%.
With regard to the TEU handled, the result for this semester is quite favorable, reaching 178 255 tons, compared to the 132 483 tons handled in the same semester of 2020.
In the total number of ships calls, there was -6.9% compared to 2020, with a -3.3% decrease in the entry of cargo ships this year.
