Port of Lisbon hosts the Public Presentation of the National Committee for the Decade of the Ocean

Today [24th January], the Port of Lisbon welcomed the public presentation of the National Committee for the Decade of the Ocean at the Alcântara Maritime Terminal, an event under the High Patronage of His Excellency the President of the Republic. The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 began in 2021 with the motto 'The Science We Need for the Ocean We Want.' The National Committee for the Decade of the Ocean (CNDO) has the mission of promoting and coordinating Portugal's actions to achieve the objectives of the Decade of the Ocean, with a special focus on the Atlantic and in close relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2017, the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 is currently in the implementation phase, internationally coordinated by the UN through IOC/UNESCO. This initiative aims to seek innovative and transformative solutions in marine sciences and technologies that support sustainable development, promoting an equitable approach between people and the Ocean. Portugal, with its rich history, maritime vocation, vast oceanic area under its jurisdiction, and a prominent role in the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and the United Nations on Maritime Affairs, aims to maintain and strengthen its leadership position in ocean research and governance, especially in the Atlantic. The objectives of this Committee include promoting the crucial role of Science in various domains to achieve the goals of the Decade, considering the relevance of the Ocean to Portugal's development and the country's maritime identity in modern times.
