Port of Lisbon enhances sustainability efforts
The Port of Lisbon has established a partnership with EPI - Environmental Port Index, a system developed by a group of Norwegian ports in collaboration with the consultancy firm DNV and several maritime industry experts, which allows the assessment and monitoring of ships emissions during their time in port. Lisbon is the first port in Southern Europe to join the EPI network.
Lisbon takes a step forward in environmental sustainability
In this regard, Carlos Correia, President of the Port of Lisbon Authority (APL) administration stated that “APL has long recognized the need for detailed information on ships calls at the Port of Lisbon. EPI is the perfect solution to this need, and we are excited to be part of this network. Through this new agreement, the port will have access to valuable data to help monitor the environmental impact of ships that visit it, and by joining the EPI network, it strengthens its environmental strategy and deepens its commitment to sustainability. It is worth noting that Lisbon will be the first port to apply this system to cargo ships, since to date it has only been applied to cruise ships. We are currently in the process of choosing a shipowner to serve as a pilot for the implementation of this process.”
In turn, Even Husby, CEO of EPI, says that “we are very happy to welcome our first Southern European port on board”. “Lisbon is making great strides towards sustainability, and we are excited to help the port collect the data needed to better understand emissions and ship performance.”
The perfect combination for sustainable solutions
The EPI platform monitors, among other things, atmospheric emissions from ships in ports, providing a comprehensive overview of the sustainability performance of ships. This data-driven approach promotes accountability and drives progress in reducing port-related pollution.
The impact of EPI on emissions reduction
Since its launch in 2019, EPI has become a leading global initiative, promoting collaboration between ports and ship operators to reduce emissions and sustainability, paving the way for a greener future in the maritime industry.
“We are already seeing remarkable progress,” says Husby. “Our partners’ efforts have contributed significantly to CO2 reduction. We look forward to seeing how this collaboration with the Port of Lisbon will drive even more positive environmental change.”
A growing network of sustainability leaders
Currently, 39 ports in Scandinavia and Europe are part of the EPI network, with additional ports planned to join the network soon. This growing collaboration continues to pave the way for more sustainable practices in the global maritime industry, promoting emissions reduction and environmental responsibility across the sector.
