Explora II Makes Its Debut at the Port of Lisbon – New Luxury Ship Awarded Environmental Distinctions

The Port of Lisbon welcomed for the first time the Explora II, the latest ship from the new luxury brand Explora Journeys, part of the MSC Group. This stop is part of a voyage that has Barcelona as its homeport, with stops in Málaga, Gibraltar, Tangier, and Ibiza, in addition to Lisbon, further reinforcing Lisbon’s position as a prominent luxury cruise destination.

The Explora II, recently christened in Civitavecchia by marine environmentalist Rosalba Giugni, brings with it a strong commitment to sustainability. The ship, built at the Fincantieri shipyards in Italy, has received several environmental distinctions, including the “Green Plus” notation from RINA, recognizing its high ecological performance. Additionally, it was awarded the “Dolphin” classification for minimizing noise impact on sensitive marine ecosystems, and the “Comfort Noise and Vibration” notation, ensuring a quiet travel experience with low levels of noise and vibration.

Carlos Correia, President of the Port of Lisbon Administration (APL), emphasized the importance of this debut: “We are very proud to welcome a cruise company like Explora Journeys, which shares the same values of sustainability and commitment to energy transition as the Port of Lisbon. Together, we work to reduce the carbon footprint and mitigate the impacts of cruise activity, aligning ourselves with the highest environmental standards in this industry, which contributes so much, both socially and economically, to the benefit of the regions where it operates.”

In addition to its ecological innovations, the Explora II stands out for its luxury and comfort. Measuring 248 meters in length, the ship offers 461 suites, all with private balconies and sea views, averaging 42 square meters per cabin. With a capacity for 922 passengers and 640 crew members, the ship maintains a ratio of one crew member for every 1.25 passengers, ensuring excellent service. Guests can enjoy six exclusive restaurants, 12 bars and lounges, several pools, and extensive wellness areas.

The Explora II’s first visit to Lisbon, standing 56 meters tall above the waterline and weighing 63,900 tons, was marked by the traditional presentation of a commemorative plaque to the ship’s captain, Serena Melani, in a ceremony organized by the Port of Lisbon, with a special escort from Portugs tugboats.

This event strengthens Lisbon’s position as one of the top ports of call for luxury cruises while celebrating advancements in maritime sustainability, a commitment shared by both Explora Journeys and the Port of Lisbon.
