Conference and Documentary 'Cais da Europa: Roger Kahan no Porto de Lisboa' Conclude Celebrations of the 136th Anniversary of the Port of Lisbon

The Port of Lisbon, in partnership with A Mensagem de Lisboa, will present on November 9, at 3:00 PM, at the Alcântara Maritime Terminal, the documentary 'Cais da Europa: Roger Kahan no Porto de Lisboa,' followed by a debate on 'The role of the Port of Lisbon, the city, and Portugal in saving lives during the Second World War: why is it so forgotten.' The debate will feature the participation of historians José Pacheco Pereira and Irene Fluser Pimentel, diplomat Seixas da Costa, and José Ruah from the Jewish Community of Lisbon, moderated by journalist Catarina Carvalho (Mensagem de Lisboa).

Before the debate, the film/documentary 'Cais da Europa: Roger Kahan in the Port of Lisbon,' produced by the newspaper Mensagem de Lisboa and directed by Humberto Giancristofaro, will be premiered. The film is based on the fact that the Port of Lisbon was, at a certain point during World War II, the only port in Europe open to welcoming refugees, mostly Jews, and allowing them to depart on ships with hopes for a new life.

The conference concludes with a live interview with Ferreira Fernandes, author of the book 'O Cais da Europa, Roger Kahan, refugiado, fotógrafo – Lisboa, 1940,' conducted by journalist Manuela Goucha Soares from Semanário Expresso.
This marks the end of the celebrations for the 136th anniversary of the Port of Lisbon, under the High Patronage of the Presidency of the Republic and the official support of Yilport Iberia, Lisbon Cruise Port (LCP), Navalrocha, and Portugs.

October was filled with initiatives, with a special highlight on October 31, featuring the inauguration of artist Vhils' installation—a mural on the wall of a building adjacent to the Rocha Conde d’Óbidos Maritime Terminal that pays tribute to those refugees based on a photograph by Roger Kahan, also a refugee. The month also saw the launch of the aforementioned book on this theme by journalist Ferreira Fernandes, with the presence of the President of the Republic, Prof. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

The various works related to the theme—the installation, the book, and the film/documentary—portray the Port of Lisbon as a haven and savior for thousands of refugees when all docks in Europe closed during a terrible moment in the world. The chosen theme for the anniversary, in the current global context, not only recalls the generosity of the Port of Lisbon and the city but also revitalizes the memory of a not-so-distant past that is important to know to prevent its repetition.

Registrations for this November 9 event should be made through the email: administracao@portodelisboa.pt ."
