Port of Lisbon Launches "Cruises for the Community" Program
APL – Administration of the Port of Lisbon announces the launch of the "Cruises for the Community" program, a pioneering initiative aimed at strengthening ties between cruise companies and the local community, promoting social integration and sustainable development in the city of Lisbon.
With the "Cruises for the Community" program, the Port of Lisbon aims to foster a positive and collaborative relationship between the cruise industry and the city, creating connections between the cruise ships visiting Lisbon and the local residents, encouraging sustainable tourism practices, and directly involving the local community. In addition to economic benefits, this innovative program is expected to contribute to environmental preservation, educational development, and social well-being, positioning Lisbon as a leader in responsible and participatory tourism.
Carlos Correia, President of APL, emphasizes that “The 'Cruises for the Community' program reflects our commitment to promoting a sustainable interaction between cruise companies and the citizens of Lisbon. We want Lisboans to feel the positive impact of this sector, not only in economic terms but also in terms of community and environmental engagement.”
The main initiatives include:
Guided Tours of Cruise Ships – For schools and parish councils.
Urban and Environmental Conservation Projects – In collaboration with the Lisbon City Council and environmental organizations such as Quercus, ICNF, and ABAAE.
Scholarship and Professional Training Programs – In partnership with the IEFP and hospitality education institutions.
Donation of Equipment and Materials – Computers and sports equipment will be donated to schools, community centers, and charities.
Awareness and Education Sessions – Educational sessions in partnership with the Lisbon City Council and environmental NGOs.
As part of this "Cruises for the Community" initiative promoted by APL, two Carnival UK executives were in Lisbon for a series of meetings with local entities to learn about their projects and causes. Simon Ashwell, Vice President of Corporate Affairs, and Sophie Portlock, Vice President of Sustainability, visited Dona Ajuda, a non-profit organization focused on social, cultural, and environmental work, located at the Rato Market.
To better understand the perspectives and priorities of the respective entities, the two Carnival UK representatives also welcomed onboard the Ventura cruise ship, docked at the Lisbon Cruise Terminal, the Vice President of ENIDH - Infante D. Henrique Nautical School and the Vice President of the Student Association, as well as the National Coordinator of ABAAE - Blue Flag Association for Environmental and Educational Awareness. Several joint actions were scheduled.
According to Simon Ashwell, "each meeting allowed us to understand the variety of work being done locally and revealed excellent opportunities to collaborate more closely with the organizations we engaged with."
