The Pilotage Department develops the Pilotage activity as a public service that consists in the technical assistance to Masters of the vessels in shiphandling and manoeuvring in waters of national jurisdiction so as to assure that they are carried or in safety.

This service is carried out by professionals of the pilotage of harbours and ports, called Pilots, who are duly qualified and licensed and have experience in manoeuvring ships in limited spaces and know the local characteristics and applicable regulations.
