First time ever! Baptism ceremonies take place in Lisbon
The new cruise ship Mein Schiff 2 will be christened in Lisbon on February the 9th in what will be the first time a cruise ship elects a Portuguese port for such an important ceremony. On March 6 will be the turn of the old Mein Schiff 2 to be baptized with his current name Mein Schiff Herz.
On her maiden voyage between Bremerhaven and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Mein Schiff 2 arrives in Lisbon on the morning of February the 8th, and she will remain until the 10th.
Mein Schiff 2 will be christened the night of the 9th, by his godmother Carolin Niemczyk, the German vocalist of the duo Glasperlenspiel, in a ceremony on board and the ship will be positioned next to the bridge 25 of April. After the ceremony there will be fireworks that can be observed from the riverside front, approximately between 10:10 and 10:30 p.m.
For the Lisbon Port authority "This is an event that makes us very proud and shows the results of our work in developing the cruise port. We are sure that this is the way we should continue to move forward and every day we feel more motivated to continue" says Lídia Sequeira, President of the Port Authority.
On February 8th, the usual welcome ceremony will be held aboard the ship, in which the port of Lisbon will present Captain Kjell Holm with the usual commemorative plaque of the occasion, passengers will be offered gifts produced exclusively for the event, and the ship will be escorted by tugboats from the Svitzer company to the new Cruise Terminal in Lisbon, where she will be berthed.
Built in the Meyer Turku Shipyard shipyards in Finland in less than 24 months, the new Mein Schiff 2 was delivered to TUI on 22 January in Kiel, Germany. Wybcke Meier, CEO of Tui Cruises, said "that the delivery of Mein Schiff 2 marks the successful end of the first phase of expansion. Our sixth ship, built by Meyer Turku, impresses not only by her design but also using modern technologies, to the highest standards for environmental protection. " According to Wybcke Meier the Mein Schiff 2 consumes less than about 40% energy than a conventional vessel of the same size, which is possible through an integrated energy management system, innovative lighting controls, the use of LED, eco-friendly underwater silicone coating and hydrodynamic hull shape. In addition, air conditioning generators have an innovative control unit and frequency-regulated motors to avoid wasting energy. The Mein Schiff 2 also has scrubbers and catalytic converters reducing CO2 emissions.
With a length of 315.7 meters, 111 500 tonnes, 36 meters high and 14 decks, the new Mein Schiff 2 has a maximum capacity of 3 132 passengers and 1 092 crew members. The Mein Schiff 2 has 7,100m2 of dining space, with 15 bars and lounges, an area of 2,400m2 of spa and gymnasium, and 1 447 passenger cabins, of which 90% have views of the sea and 80% have balconies.
